'Til The Gods Devour Us is a Pico-8 micro-strategy game where you lead the defenses of a fortress besieged by a vast army. Your goal is to survive until reinforcements arrive at the end of the 5th Day.

It's an experimental game, mixing elements and mechanics from tower defense, RTS, roguelike, and board games with Pico-8's minimalism and lo-fi aesthetics.

Throughout the game, a help menu at the bottom right corner displays the controls that vary slightly according to each phase.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is how to use the basic Pico-8 inputs:

  • Arrow Buttons: ←, →, ↑ and ↓
  • "O" Button: Z, C, or N
  • "X" Button: X, V, or M

During Preparation, players can use their peasants to get random Action Points. Every 5 Peasants gets you 1 Action Point. "Used" Peasants become Idle, can't be utilized to buy new Action Points, and can't be deployed until the next Day.

You can use your Action Points to execute one of the 5 Actions:

  • Boiling Oil: Choose one of the wall sections to place a cauldron of boiling oil. The cauldron gets spilled on incoming enemies once they get close, dealing damage.
  • Treat Wounded: Heal a random number of troops killed during the previous Day.
  • Train Peasants: Transforms a random amount of peasants into Infantry soldiers.
  • Scouting: Scouts reveal which section of the wall will get the weakest attack and how many enemies will attack it.
  • Caltrops: Place caltrops on the grounds in front of the castle, slowing enemy movement by 25%.

Unnused Action Points carry out for the next Day.

Choose and deploy your troops on the four Wall Sections. Use the lateral arrow keys to browse through Sections and the vertical arrow keys to add and remove troops.

The selection arrow changes color to indicate the type of troops:

  • Dark Blue = Infantry
  • Light Blue = Archers
  • Pink = Peasants

During combat, the only action available for you is to send reinforcements.

Press the "O" button to open the Reinforcements menu. With the Reinforcements menu open, you can select the area you wish to reinforce and how many troops you want to send.

Once all the enemies attacking a Wall Section are defeated, the troops there return to the castle and can be used as reinforcements.

Great work! Pico-8 file possible? Thanks

This is an interesting little game! I really like the artwork for the town and castle. It brings to mind the old Kings Quest and medieval adventure games I've played. Though I'm not as big a fan of the pseudo-tower defense gameplay as the controls are a bit obtuse, I think this is really charming!
